VIRTUES OF THE MONTH

During the month of January, we are focusing on new beginnings calling on our school community to demonstrate self-discipline and commitment. Families are encouraged to talk about these virtues together.

Book Cover Art for I Am Ruby Bridges
I Am Ruby Bridges by Ruby Bridges

This is the true story of a young girl, Ruby Bridges, told by Ruby Bridges herself! When Ruby was only six years old, she became the first Black child to integrate the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans. Her story outlines the intensity of her first day of school in 1960, a day that required a young child to navigate a tense and hostile environment.  Read along with Miss Alivia Reads.

Book Cover Art for I Am Courage
I Am Courage: A Book of Resilience by Susan Verde with Art by Peter Reynolds

When we imagine someone brave, we might think they are fearless, but courage actually comes from feeling scared and
facing what challenges us even though we are scared. When our minds tell us, “I can’t,” we can look inside ourselves and find the strength to say, “Yes, I CAN!”   Check out the read aloud with Aureliana Kids Stories.

Book Cover Art for We Are The Change
We Are the Change by Harry Belafonte

Sixteen award-winning artists illustrate civil rights quotations that inspire them in this beautiful and moving book. With an introduction by Harry Belafonte, it includes quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and sets a powerful example for generations of young leaders.  While these short stories are not available as read alouds online, families may enjoy listening to a segment of "Keep on Fighting: The Life and Music of Harry Belafonte" as presented by the Berklee College of Music. Musician, songwriter, and social activist Harry Belafonte was a powerful voice in the Civil Rights and Anti-Apartheid movements.
