BEFORE/AFTER CARE

About Before and After School Child Care

At times, families need childcare that covers time before and after school hours, which are 8:35 AM -- 3:30 PM at Harford Hills. Families that need this service are financially responsible for the childcare and will enter into a contract with a private provider. Often, the family is responsible for transportation to and from the care provider.

Affording Before/After Childcare

A limited number of scholarships are provided by the Maryland State Department of Education through the Childcare Scholarship Program to help families who meet the qualifications afford extended day care.

Families approved in the previous school year must meet the timeline for redetermination if they wish to receive a scholarship for each new school year.

There has been an enrollment freeze in place for this scholarship since May 2025, but MSDE is encouraging families to apply so that they can be considered as spots open. It also helps them to monitor and respond to needs in our state; recently, the state added 20 million dollars to this scholarship to shorten the waitlist.

There are two exceptions to the freeze:
  • Families experiencing homelessness are exempt from the waitlist and are eligible to receive scholarships immediately if they meet all other program eligibility requirements.
  • Those who receive Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are also exempt from the enrollment freeze.

The school does not manage these scholarships, but HHES families needing support completing the application can ask our Community School Facilitator for assistance.
